Psychological support for your clients with disordered eating

I’m Blake Davis — a registered psychologist and practising psychoanalyst in Melbourne, specialising in the emotional and relational dimensions of eating difficulties. I work collaboratively with dieticians to provide integrated care.

When difficulties with food go beyond nutrition, psychological work can help your client engage more fully with the changes you’re supporting.

Why Refer

Working together on disordered eating

Many clients in dietetic care are managing emotional and psychological difficulties alongside their nutritional goals. When anxiety, compulsive behaviour, shame, or relational conflict are part of the picture, psychological support can help your client engage more meaningfully with the work you’re already doing together.

Beyond behaviour change

I work with the underlying emotional and relational dynamics that maintain disordered eating patterns — the meaning food holds, the function of symptoms, and what makes change difficult.

Psychoanalytic depth

Drawing on both evidence-based methods and psychoanalytic thinking, I help clients explore aspects of their relationship to food and body that may not be immediately visible.

Collaborative care

With your client’s consent, I’m happy to communicate regularly about their progress, coordinate treatment goals, and ensure our approaches complement one another.

My Approach

How I work with eating and body image concerns

Understanding the whole person

Disordered eating rarely exists in isolation. I take time to understand the broader emotional landscape — family dynamics, developmental history, self-image, and the relational patterns that shape how someone relates to food and their body.

Psychological and psychoanalytic methods

I combine evidence-based psychological techniques with psychoanalytic thinking. This means working not only with conscious goals and behaviours, but also with the less visible emotional currents — ambivalence about recovery, unconscious patterns, and the role symptoms play in a person’s life.
